This is definitely not the first time someone has debated out this, but I will give my own opinion on this as well.
Amateur or Professional Photographer, Clearly the world has been overrun with cameras. Build into nearly every device that you can buy, it has opened up a new way for people to capture memories and become amateur photographers.
As good as a mobile phone camera may be, you cannot compare it to a 24mp DSLR. Not all to long ago it was rather expensive for anyone to own a high end DSLR and it was easier to settle on a small digital camera to capture your holiday pictures or daily events.
Today you can buy a new or second hand DSLR for less then 1k. even though this may still be expensive for some, the possibility for everyone to buy one at an affordable price does exist. Which now opens up to be come a semi-pro photographer.
What is now the differentiation between a professional and a amateur?
Let me answer by telling you my own classification: I am a Professional Amateur.
No mater how good or bad your camera or gear may be, you always have loads of roam for improvement. You can take up a course at a college or even study photography and media at Uni. as beneficial as this may be, it is not the way it works for everyone. Some learn better by reading up information by themselves, some find it easier to watch YouTube videos and have someone explain the details to you and some just have a talent to take the camera and shoot pictures.
Not to insult someone that has studied years and is ultra-pro at photography, but you can also reach those heights by just spending time with your camera. If you want to know more feel free to get in touch.
